ABOUT THAT MURAL + OUR LOGO…

AN HOMAGE TO glenn hammond curtiss

On May 21, 1878, the fastest man on earth was born in Hammondsport, New York: Glenn H. Curtiss. His affinity for inventions and creativity was evident at an early age, and his career was influenced by his work as a bicycle racer and bicycle-shop owner.

At age 24, Curtiss began producing his own motorcycles. Only one year later, in 1903, Curtiss began his journey to fame by setting a record speed of driving 64 MPH for one consecutive mile. It was just the beginning of what Curtiss had to offer.

On January 21, 1906, Curtiss performed a feat that dubbed him "the fastest man on earth." In Ormond Beach, Florida, he drove a V-8 powered motorcycle he manufactured himself at a world record speed of 136.36 MPH - a record that remained untouched for almost 25 years.

Curtiss was then approached by Tom Baldwin, an aeronautic entrepreneur. Conversations surrounding Curtiss's power to weight ratio in his engines sparked his interest in aviation. This "interest" would snowball and result in Curtiss becoming wildly famous for his success in the world of flight.

At Crooked Lake Ice Cream Company, we strive to evoke the same drive and creativity that existed in Glenn H. Curtiss, and to teach others about this Hammondsport hero.
