The glorious hills of the Chemung River Valley, declared a “foretaste of heaven” by Mark Twain, are home to Harris Hill, recognized as the Soaring Capital of America! Come and experience the thrill of soaring first hand at a complex which Amelia Earhart proclaimed to be the “finest gliding and soaring facilities in the country”. Harris Hill Soaring Corporation also boasts the world’s largest youth soaring club and young pilots-in-training (14-19 years) can be found scampering about the runway throughout the summer months. During the months of July and August, sailplane rides for the general public are available daily, 10 AM to 6 PM. From September through October, rides are available weekends only, 10 AM to 6 PM. No appointments are taken; just drop in! The center operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Only one passenger per glider ride is permitted (FAA regulations). Glider rides are typically 15 – 20 minutes in length and run $65 to $75 per person depending on aircraft selection.
Be sure to also visit the National Soaring Museum, adjacent to the soaring field. Great displays on the history of motorless flight. http://soaringmuseum.org
