Owner Nicholas Thayer said he is proud to bring a new genre of food to Watkins Glen. After traveling throughout the country, Nicholas realized his love of southern and mid-western styled bar-b-que. He decided to bring both styles together, with an upstate New York flair and open up Nickel’s Pit BBQ.
“It’s tough to put a label on the style of bar-b-que,” Thayer said. “I can tell you that our bar-b-que will be slow-smoked up to sixteen hours – it's a good mix of American bar-b-que with an upstate influence. The entire menu will be 100 percent made from scratch, and the meat will be from local farms.”
Some of the other foods that will be offered are smoked meatloaf and smoked chicken wings. Thayer said the restaurant will use wood from local cherry and maple trees to smoke the bar-b-que.
Throughout the winter, Nickel’s Pit BBQ will only be open on Saturdays. However, starting in the spring, the restaurant will stay open seven days a week.
