More Information

Local artist, Joyce Merletti, has assembled an impressive display of more than 30 of her beautiful icons to exhibit at the National Soaring Museum during the fall and winter months.

Joyce began to work in iconography in 2004, as a student of Peter Pearson and has so far completed about 140 icons. Her traditional icons present images of Christ, the Saints and events depicted in the Gospels - all in vivid colors with gold highlights, meticulously executed.

The term "iconography" tells us that icons are written, not painted, because, as has been said, icons are the Gospels in color and line. The work is done on a table, or flat surface, not on an easel, adding to the idea of writing. Today we paint on commercially produced boards, often using acrylic paints instead of egg tempera, but the process is still laborious.  Many layers of paint are needed to produce the jewel-like colors.

Admission to Joyce Merletti’s Icon Exhibit is included in the regular museum admission of $7.50 for Adults, $6.00 for seniors, and $4.50 for children 7-18. Children 6 years and under are free and there is also a family rate of $20 which includes 2 adults and 2 or more children or grandchildren. Open daily 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM.
