Newark Valley Historical Society

Newark Valley, NY 13811

The Newark Valley Historical Society preserves and interprets the past of Newark Valley, Northern Tioga County and New York. The Society operates two historic sites: The Bement-Billings Farmstead, located just north of Newark Valley on Route 38, and the Railroad Depot, inside the Village. The Bement-Billings Farmstead is a living history museum which interprets domestic life, agricultural practices, and the natural environment of the early 1800's. The property includes the original Bement farmhouse, a replica blacksmith shop, a reconstructed threshing barn, additional out-buildings, and 90 acres of the Bement family's farmland. The Sycamore Bridge leads to Nature Trails across the east branch of the Owego Creek. This restored 1880’s Train Depot is located in the center of the village of Newark Valley. Exhibits include railroad memorabilia, a restored caboose, and a regional scale model Lehigh Valley Railroad display. Refreshments and old-fashioned candy are available at the snack bar and candy counter during Depot events. The Depot is open June-September for Depot Friday Nights, a series of free concerts and lectures. Other special events include Spring Fling, Newark Valley Day, an annual Antique Appraisal, and Holiday Magic. The facility is available for rental, subject to availability.
