WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (June 23, 2016) – The family-friendly and fan-involved atmosphere has always been a trademark of the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen at Watkins Glen International.
During the upcoming June 30-July 3 event, however, off-track fan activities will be taken to a new level featuring several new and exciting additions, along with the much-anticipated return of sportscar fan favorites.
“The WeatherTech SportsCar Championship is unlike any other racing series in the country, in that you can walk right up to the team transporters and see the mechanics working on the cars, catch a driver in the paddock, and walk the grid before the race,” said Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup. “Our fans are treated to an experience like none other during the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen.”
Autograph sessions kick off on the afternoon of July 1 with competitors from the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA/Canada by Yokohama from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by the Mazda Prototype Lites drivers from 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Both sessions are scheduled to take place in the area of the midway.
Kicking off on Friday, July 1 at 6:30 p.m., the Jack Daniels Summer Stage is transformed into a competitive and fun arena for the 9th Annual Sahlen’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Afterwards, Nikki Briar and the SweetBriar Band, along with Iron Horse, will rock the stage into the Western New York summer night.
On Saturday July 2, don’t miss an opportunity to start the day with coffee, donuts, and a conversation with Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup. From 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at Concession Stand 5 (near Camping Section D), Printup and members of the WGI staff will be present to speak with fans while enjoying a light breakfast in the infield.
Later, pit lane opens for fan access and pre-race festivities at 11:30 a.m., prior to the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Continental 150, which is scheduled to go green at 12:25 p.m.
While the Continental 150 heats up on the twists and turns of The Glen, WeatherTech SportsCar Championship drivers will be present at their team transporters in the paddock from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Saturday for a driver autograph session.
Later on Saturday evening, the skies above Watkins Glen’s historic circuit will be lit with a holiday weekend edition fireworks display scheduled for dusk, providing fans and campers a patriotic interlude on the eve of the weekend’s main event.
Culminating with the green flag dropping on the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen at 10:10 a.m., Sunday’s pre-race festivities begin bright and early at 8:30 with a tweet-up in Gatorade Victory Lane, complete with giveaways and special guests, and continue with one more opportunity to get up close and personal on the grid, with a fan walk on pit lane beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Weekend and Sunday general admission tickets remain available for the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen, which includes nearly 24 hours of on-track action from five of America’s premier sportscar racing series over four days at Watkins Glen International.
